19.8 Environmental accidents
Every shipyard worker is responsible to make an emergency call and report
an environmental accident. If you notice an environmental accident, immediately
inform your supervisor or the shipyard fire department according to site specific
instructions. According to the law, liability for compensation shall primarily lie
with a person whose activity has caused the environmental damage.
An environmental damage is defined as a loss resulting from pollution of the water,
air or soil or other similar nuisance. Usually environmental accidents are caused by
inappropriate storage or handling of chemicals or oils, overfilled tanks and
containers or equipment failure. The environmental impact of the substance is based
on its properties (e.g. degradability, penetration ability, accumulation and toxicity),
as well as on the amount of spilled substance, and measures to combat and collect
spills.
