1. IMPROVING SAFETY IS EVERYONE’S CONCERN
1. Improving safety is everyone’s concern
A safe and healthy working environment is a basic right
of every worker. It also contributes to the wellbeing
of the personnel and their ability to work.
Everybody is responsible to inform of the risks
at the working place. If the worker can eliminate any
faults and defects himself, he should do it, and then
inform the supervisor or the principal company’s
representative. This is how you may be able
to prevent the accident from happening to someone
else.
Safety at work can be improved by following
these principles:
1.1 Planning
The goal of work planning is to eliminate any risks involved in the work. There are
many different concepts about planning. However, the common factor is their attempt
to ensure safe working conditions. The safety aspects should always be included in
all stages: from the initial planning stage, to the supervisor and the worker choosing
the most suitable method and equipment for the work. Always consider what you are
doing and how you are going to do it before you begin the work.
1.2 Taking care of own physical and mental load
During the working day, it is important to listen to your body and take care of well-balanced
physical and mental load. If working conditions create symptoms and signs
of irritation, you should inform about it to your supervisor. The supervisor and the
experts will examine whether the working is safe. Before and after hard work even
short restorative stretching and a few deep breaths relieve stress. Adequate sleep and
rest ensure recovery.
1.3 Taking care of personal vitality and concentration skills
Drinking enough water and keeping up stable blood sugar level during your working
day help to prevent sudden fatigue. A bottle of water and small snacks between meals
are helpful. Fatigue is always an occupational safety risk.
1.4 Eliminating a danger
Any recognizable dangers should be eliminated as much as possible. If you notice a
danger that you could eliminate yourself in a safe way, do it (e.g. something in the way
that might cause someone to trip). In any case inform your supervisor about it.
