22. FIRST AID FOR COMMON INJURIES
Wound care
Stop the bleeding by applying pressure over the wound.
Raise the injured limb, avoid moving it.
If there is severe bleeding, lay the person down.
Apply a pressure bandage on the wound.
A good pressure bandage is a cold compress. It will also help
to reduce the bleeding.
Applying a
pressure bandage
on the wound
Press the wound
and raise
the injured limb
Bruises, strains and
sprains
Apply these three principles:
Lifting: Raise the affected limb
Compress: pressure
on the wound minimizes
bleeding, swelling, and pain
Cold: Apply a cold compress,
a bag of ice cubes or anything
else applicable on the injured
area to minimize swelling and
bleeding. Use a cold compress
for no longer than 30 minutes
at a time. You can continue
the treatment every one or
two hours for one or two days,
depending on the severity
of injury.
