12. HOISTING
General hoisting
instructions
The lifting equipment operator is responsible
to remove unauthorized persons
from the lift zone and isolate the area, if
needed.
When performing lifting operations, it is
important to consider other operations
taking place in the area and ensure coordination
of different work and tasks.
Use only lifting equipment that is inspected,
designed for the lift you are planning
to do. It is absolutely forbidden to lift
people at the same time as any load.
Equipment for lifting personnel has been
specifically marked for this purpose. Use
only properly marked equipment to lift
people.
Do not start any hoisting work unless you
have received adequate training to use
the equipment in question or are sure
that you can manage the hoisting equipment
and all the different phases of the
hoisting operation.
Do not operate a
remote controlled
crane unless you
have been trained
for this operation.
Hoisting operations must be planned
carefully. Special lifting operations,
where two or more items of lifting
equipment are used or lifting large and
heavy items always require a separate
written plan, that ensures coordination
of different activities related to hoisting.
Always keep in mind centre of gravity of
the load when fastening lifting straps,
wire rope slings, chains or any other
connectors. If you have several straps
or chains make sure the load is properly
balanced between each lifting point. Stop
the operation when the load has been lifted
for half a metre and check the balance
and fastenings.
Snow, sleet, rain, and ice cause metal
pipes to be slippery. Keep this in mind
and be sure to have and maintain
a secure hold of the load.
Warn people working in the lifting zone
about imminent lifting operations. If necessary,
mark the risk zone, isolate it, and
arrange for it to be guarded. Never leave
a load hanging in mid-air. It is dangerous
to people passing below.
The lifting operation is completed only
when the load has been placed in its
new position in such a way that it cannot
fall or tip and the lifting accessories and
equipment is put in its place.
Use pallet lifters or forklifts for lifting pallets.
Tie the load carefully or use a pallet
lifter with a cage when lifting. Be sure that
small items cannot fall from in between
the pallet and the cage.
Do not stand or walk in lifting zone.
