19. SUSTAINABLE MARITIME INDUSTRY
19.1 Material efficiency
Material efficiency refers to careful use
of natural resources, side-stream
management, waste reduction and reuse
of materials. The amount of industrial
waste can be reduced through
increasing efficiency in natural
resource use, minimizing
adverse environmental
impact
and cost-effective
solutions.
The idea behind
material efficiency
is zero waste
One ton of recycled glass used,
e.g. for production of glass packages
or thermal insulation, conserves
natural resources:
650 kg of sand
205 kg of soda
190 kg of limestone
80 kg feldspar
– only unused raw
material.

activities that

help to reduce the amount
of industrial waste and promote
better recycling. At different stages
of production the environment can be
affected directly by selection of raw
materials.
Rational use of materials helps to
protect natural resources, the environment,
reduced costs and mitigates
the effects of climate change. Material
efficiency is very important concept
for cost-effective management in mari-
time industry.
19.2 Energy efficiency
Improving energy efficiency, i.e. using
less energy to produce goods, brings
financial benefits and reduces emissions.
At a shipyard the consumption of energy
and water is significant expenditure.
Everyone can affect these
costs by changing his /
her individual habits.
Keeping equipment
and machinery well
maintained and
correctly adjusted
can be very
cost- e f f i c i e n t .
Electric tools
and lights need
to be switched off
after work. During
the heating season it
is important to reduce
heat loss. Energy efficiency
includes rational use of energy
in construction and procurement, promoting
renewable energy sources and
energy savings during business travels.
