9. PHYSICAL LOAD
9.11 Alertness and concentration
Plan your daily meal. In addition to your regular food take some snacks with you to
work. Well-balanced diet helps to maintain alertness and concentration at work. Identify
physical stress and take into account the problems associated with shift and work.
Make sure you are getting the right amount of sleep. Keep in mind that a heavy meal
taken just before going to bed may facilitate the process of falling asleep, but the body
then is not resting properly. Let your stomach rest and have a light meal in the evening.
Take under consideration that drinking alcohol in the night or late evening causes poor
sleep quality.
When you are thirsty drink water little by little, it is preferable to sip water throughout
the day rather than to drink two glasses all at once. Decreased alertness may be a sign
of dehydration, especially when you have physical stress and sweat during the workday.
When you feel tired, take a sip of water, and then take five deep breaths with shortbreath
hold. Our cells need water, nutrients and oxygen to make energy. Drinks and
beverages with artificial additives hook people, but they are unhealthy and help only
for a while.
Avoid extra thoughts. Things you cannot control or influence cause mental stress and
take your attention away from very important in terms of safety aspect, i.e. ability to focus
and concentrate. It is crucial that you can fully concentrate on what you are doing.
