Definitions
A shared workplace is a workplace where
there is one employer, who holds the
authority, and where there is more than
one employer or self-employed person
working at the same time or consecutively.
The client, i.e. the principal company,
holds the authority based on the Occupational
Safety and Health Act.
The supplier is the employer that works
for the Client at a shared workplace. Contractors,
subcontractors and self-employed
persons are categorized as suppliers.
Hazard (Hazardous situation) is a factor
or a situation that could cause personal
injury, weakening of health, damage to
property or work place.
Risk is the combination of seriousness
and probability of the damages that a hazardous
situation could cause.
Hazard identification: recognizing that
a risk exists and defining its character.
Risk assessment - the process includes
recognizing and estimating the risk.
Risk management consists of recognizing,
estimating and evaluating the
existing risks, and identifying actions,
their implementation and follow-up.
A near-miss situation is a situation that
has already taken place and has not caused
any physical injury, but that could
have caused such injuries.
Safety observation is a report concerning
any problems and defects made by
an employee. Safety observation form
should be submitted to own supervisor.
The supervisor submits the form to the
occupational safety officer (manager) after
taking corrective actions.
An accident at work is a sudden and
unexpected series of events that causes
physical injury or sickness. An accident
can take place in the course of his/her
duties, in circumstances arising from the
duties at the workplace or in an area pertaining
to it, while commuting from his/
her residence to the workplace or vice
versa, or while attending to business for
the employer elsewhere. Compensations
for accidents and work-related diseases
are paid in Finland based on the Employ-
ment Accidents Insurance Act.
Legislation on environmental protection
gives regulations pertaining to the
soil, water, and air, waste management
and waste treatment, as well as the storage,
treatment and transportation of
chemicals.
The plants and operations that require
an environmental permit have been
defined in the Environmental Protection
Act. The permit authorities give the company
an environmental permit for the
facility. This permit includes regulations
regarding environmental protection and
monitoring the state of the environment.
