Using a torch in closed and confined spaces
Learn the instructions regarding working in closed and confined spaces before attempting
the work. Make arrangements for this work with your supervisor, especially when
there is only one way of access to the place where you are working.
Always provide adequate ventilation when you use a torch in a closed or confined
space.
Check the gas hoses and equipment separately prior to each time you use them.
Always watch for gas leaks from hoses or torch in confined spaces. Only authorized
hose repairmen are allowed to fix the hoses at the spot.
Do not work in a confined space unless a watchperson is outside and is continuously
within sight and hearing from you. The watchperson is to be trained so that he knows
how to turn off the gas if any hazard should occur.
Keep the gas hoses and welding cables separate when working in tanks. If the cable insulation
fails, the resulting electric arc could cause a fire in the hose. If possible, leave
one exit free from any cables and hoses. If needed, consult your supervisor regarding
opening an additional passage to the space.
Always remove gas equipment from confined spaces at the end of your working day
and even when you take a break.
Always close the valves in the distribution manifold and the cylinders after your working
day.
