Preface
The previous version of Safety, Health and Environmental Manual was produced
as part of a development partnership within the shipbuilding industry called The
Route of the Professional Shipyard Worker. The most important aim of this project
was to promote knowledge of occupational safety and health issues among the
personnel working in the shipbuilding industry. The same goal has been set in this
updated version. Arctech Helsinki Shipyard, Meyer Turku, Technip Offshore Finland
and Turku Repair Yard put their effort into preparing this manual.
This manual is meant for all the employees in the industry. It can be used as a
training material and as a tool for daily working. The manual has been translated into
English, Polish, Russian, and Estonian languages. In addition, the book is used as a
formal occupational safety guide in many workplaces.
The manual has been produced in cooperation with the safety organisations of different
companies. This safety manual has been written based on existing safety manuals
and instructions that have been born out of good and bad experiences during many
years. This manual contains the most essential instructions, and is to be used along-
side each company’s own safety instructions.
It is not enough to just have decrees and manuals in order to promote safety in our
workplace or improve job satisfaction. Every individual’s personal input is essential.
We should pay special attention to our own work and working methods, as well as
monitor our working environment and react appropriately to the risk factors we
notice. Our common goal is to make it possible for everybody to retire in the best
possible physical and mental condition.
